Yityish Aynaw - Black Miss Israel

At just 21 years old, Yityish Aynaw has gone on a remarkable life journey from a little girl playing barefoot in an Ethiopian village to an Israeli beauty queen who's ready to shine on the world stage.

Last February, the stunning 21-year-old grabbed international attention after becoming the first woman of African descent to be crowned Miss Israel at the country's beauty pageant.

"To be first, you have all the attention focused on you and I have to represent my whole ethnic group because through me they see the models," says Aynaw, who will represent Israel at the next Miss Universe contest. "Through me they see and discover our whole ethnic group."

Aynaw was born in Chahawit, a small village in northern Ethiopia, near the city of Gondar. Her father died when she was young and when she was just 12 years old she lost her mother to a painful illness. Heartbroken, she arrived in Israel with her brother to live with their Ethiopian Jewish grandparents.

"The journey was, I think, what saved me," she says. "Because I was deeply hurt and I wanted to escape from Ethiopia and forget everything that had happened and get on with it," she adds. "I wanted to break away from everything and go on."

While still a child, Aynaw was suddenly faced with a new language, a new culture and all the rest of challenges that come with starting a new life in a foreign country.

Like the estimated 125,000 Ethiopian Jews who have gone in waves over the years to Israel, Aynaw experienced the same struggle to assimilate into her new environment. But Aynaw threw herself at it, not shying away from all that her adopted country expected of her, including mastering Hebrew and serving in the Israeli army after school.

"It is three of the most significant years in my life," says Aynaw about her time in the military. "There I learned a lot about myself; there I developed," she adds. "I was a girl of 19 and the army gave me structure."

After finishing her army service, Aynaw started working as a sales clerk in a clothing store. Tall and beautiful, she long had her eye on becoming a model but she never thought about taking part in a pageant. Instead, it was a friend of hers who entered her name into the Miss Israel competition.

"We were always laughing about it," says Aynaw, who also goes by the nickname Titi. "I'd not registered during the time of my studies because I was really busy -- the army is the army, I couldn't. So when I ended she said to me 'you have got no more excuses and I am going to register you.'"
I want to give my kids the experience I never had. That is my great dream.

Her win in February changed her life instantly. Within a matter of weeks, her name and image were splashed across newspapers and websites, both in Israel and abroad.

The publicity also caught the attention of one of her heroes: Aynaw was invited to an exclusive state dinner for Barack Obama in honor of his first visit to Israel as U.S. president.

"This was an incredible moment," she says. "He was a figure that I want to emulate. I did a project on him in school and I knew what he had been through and what he had done. He was like a mentor for me, so to meet him and say hello, it was like closing a circle."

Aynaw says she had never expected something like this would happen to her.

"Suddenly I thought about the little girl who had suffered and the little girl whose only dream was to run and play the whole day. The pain I went through; I saw it all," she says.

As the first ever black Miss Israel, Aynaw is seen by some as a beacon of hope that racial prejudice is beginning to fade away in the country. Aynaw says that she's never been the victim of racism but adds that there have been instances where friends of hers have been treated differently because of the color of their skin.

"I am aware of the feeling, even if it did not happen to me," she says. "I know it [racism] exists in the country and the whole world," adds Aynaw. "It is something that has to be dispelled."

A pained little girl who has turned into a strong young woman, Aynaw is now hoping to carve out a successful career in fashion and also serve as a role model for her community.

And although her future seems set to be filled with glamorous days, Aynaw says ultimately her formula for a happy life rests on one thing.

"I have always dreamed of having a big family, a big house and a lot of kids," she says. "I want to give my kids the experience I never had. That is my great dream."

Boko Haram hunters take over checkpoints

.conduct stop and search in Maiduguri
Hundreds of youths who launched a manhunt for insurgents in Maiduguri have taken over stop and search work from soldiers, suggesting that the volunteers are assuming more responsibilities in their efforts to help root out insurgency in Borno State.
Their involvement in search work is based on the belief that they would be able to identify insurgents faster and easier than the soldiers, Daily Trust learnt.
Our correspondent who went round Maiduguri yesterday reported that the young men, who call themselves ‘Civilian JTF’, organised into different groups, took positions and conducted searches on vehicles at many checkpoints around the city.
The youths were seen stationed at check points on major roads, including Babban Layi street, Dandal Way leading to Shehu of Borno’s palace, Ahmadu Bello Way to Gwange central cemetery and some parts of Bama Road. They also manned check points along roads linking Gwange I, Gwange II, Gwange III and Gwange IV, as well as in Mafoni, Shehuri South, Budum, Bolori, Umarari, Maimusari and Jiddari Polo.
The youths were seen bearing sticks at the check points, ordering motorists to stop, park and be searched in the presence of soldiers.
Since they launched their volunteer campaign against Boko Haram two weeks ago, the youths have helped facilitate the arrest of dozens of suspected sect members.
But they have come under threat of retaliation from the sect itself, which is believed to have launched reprisals and killed dozens last week.
One of the youths who spoke to our correspondent in Maiduguri yesterday said they took to stop and search in order to abort potential retaliatory attacks.
“We took this measure in order to be aborting retaliatory attacks being planned by the Boko Haram sect members who vowed to lay ambush on us like they attempted last week when they disguised as bakers conveying bags of flower meal in a J5 car,” he said.
“And when they arrived Gwange I, they pulled out their guns shooting at everywhere. So, immediately we began to hear some strange gunshots which were not those of the soldiers, we just started running towards the direction which we heard the gunshots from. And before you know it, youths in their hundreds have already gathered there, we surrounded the J5 car loaded with flower meal bags and we firstly challenged them (the insurgents) to shoot and kill us all if they could.
“Then the five suspected Boko Haram members including the driver pretended that they were just bakers looking for a bakery in the area and after they finished their fruitless talk, we asked them to come down from the car which they resisted. So, we forcefully brought them out from the J5 car in which we discovered many guns and ammunitions.
“Subsequently, we beat and tied them up, took and handed them over to the soldiers along with their guns and ammunitions. From then we suggested to the soldiers that we should henceforth be checking motorists ourselves which the soldiers agreed.”
“Similarly, our counterparts in Sabon Gari area of Gwange II ward have last night trailed and caught three Boko Haram sect members who disguised in women cloths but with Allah’s help, our colleagues trailed, caught and handed them over to the soldiers,” he added.
There was no immediate comment from the Joint Task Force in Maiduguri on the latest efforts by the youths yesterday, but the Presidency and military authorities had last week commended the volunteers for helping in the battle against insurgency.

Obasanjo Dumps Politics For Evangelism, Organizes Nationwide Crusades

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo may dump politics for evangelism soon, DailyPost has learnt.

The Ota farmer, we gathered has joined other clerics in organising nationwide crusades.

The reason, it was learnt may no be unconnected to the fact that President Jonathan could not allow him to dictate how he wanted Nigeria to be governed.

In protest, Obasanjo was said to have dumped politics for evangelism, having been trained at the National Open University.

He was said to have teamed up with a royal father from his home town, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, Karounwi III, and the world-renowned evangelist, Kayode Williams whose ministry is Bishop Kayode Williams World Outreach, to hold crusades nationwide.

Sources disclosed that Obasanjo, Oba Tejuoso and Kayode Williams, an ex armed robber who repented while in the Sokoto prison, have begun a five-day crusade in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, yesterday.

Confirming the new status of Obasanjo, acleric who is also an indigene of Ogbomoso, Pastor Kayode Alabi, said, “Yes, it is true that former President, Obasanjo, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso and Bishop Kayode Williams are coming to Ogbomoso for a five-day crusade beginning from today (yesterday).

The whole city is agog for the programme tagged ‘‘Healing Ogbomoso Land Gospel Crusade’’ holding at the Beulah Baptist Convention Ground, Ogbomoso. The programme is being hosted by Ogbomoso Christian Ministers’ Fellowship.”

According to him, Obasanjo may have resolved to spend the remaining years of his life serving God who brought him out of prison and made him president for eight years. He said: “Baba Obasanjo has many reasons for returning to God to serve him.

You would recall how Gen. Abacha arrested him with others, sentenced him to death for alleged involvement in a phantom coup; he was set free after spending three years, three months and three days in prison. He was elected president and served for eight years and today he has many reasons to serve the same God. Don’t forget that he graduated as an evangelist from the National Open University. God could use anyone who is ready and willing to serve him.”

Dua's Layer : New Layer Discovered In The Cornea

Yippee!!! Science is at it again! You thought we knew all the parts of the human body shey? That nothing new can be discovered in the world of anatomy? Nah! You are wrong, a new part has just been discovered and Abiyamo.com is bringing it to you LIVE.

The newly-discovered part of the human body is a new layer in the human cornea. It is just 15 microns in thickness (which means it is an extremely thin layer) and it is situated between the cornea stroma and the Descemet’s membrane (go and revise ya histology of the eye jooor….lol!) But do not be deceived by its thinness, it is actually very strong and can withstand two bars of pressure. It is named DUA’S LAYER, and that is because it was discovered by PROFESSOR HARMINDER S. DUA, an Indian researcher and his team at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, and the news was released hours ago. The new layer was first mentioned in May 2013 in the journal, Ophthalmology.

The team was conducting transplant research on donated eyes when the discovery was made. Their discovery was confirmed by electron microscopy. The layer is rich in collagen and Professor Dua is very much excited (understandably). He says of the discovery: ”ophthalmology textbooks will literally need to be re-written.” Before now, scientists believed the cornea had just five layers:

-DESCEMET’S MEMBRANE

-CORNEAL EPITHELIUM

-CORNEAL STROMA

-BOWMAN’S LAYER

-CORNEAL ENDOTHELIUM

So, with Dua’s layer, we now have six layers. The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye covering the iris, pupil and other structures in front. Cornea is as smooth as glass and it is very durable. It assists in protecting the eyes by regulating and focusing the amount of light that enters the eye (as an external lens) and also protects the eyes from germs, dust and ultraviolet (UV) rays. When it is damaged, it can be replaced by transplanting from those who have donated their eyes (I hear Tinubu did that, and that his eyes should be removed after death, shey you go do the same? I can give you the address of the National Eye Bank in Kaduna o

SO WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS GREAT DISCOVERY?

The new layer will help surgeons improve the outcome for patients who are going for corneal grafts and transplants. Before the discovery, during surgical operations on the eye, tiny air bubbles are injected into the cornea in what is called the ‘big bubble technique’. Atimes, the bubble can burst and damage the patient’s eye. But now, by injecting the bubble UNDER the Dua’s layer instead of above it, the risk of the bubble bursting is reduced. In short, it makes surgery safer. But my Good People, me I have one question wey I one knack o: when are we going to start making discoveries like this for Obodo Naija?
