Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele has confirmed the collapse of her one year old wedding.

A statement by her publicist, Ayo Ola- Muhammed on Friday made the confirmation stating that “on behalf of our client, star actress, Funke Akindele, we want to formally inform you that after due consultation and consideration, she’s now separated from Mr. Kehinde Oloyede as his wife.”

“She hereby urges her fans and all concerned to pray and wish her the best as she moves on in her career.”

The statement was further authenticated with the claim that “this is the first and only official statement from Funke Akindele on the matter and will be glad if her wish is respected” the statement concluded.

The famed actress tied the knot with Kehinde Oloyede in an elaborate traditional wedding ceremony in May 2012.

Abuja Under Lockdown Over Security Threats

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), at the weekend, witnessed unusually tight security surveillance and lockdown with red beret anti-terrorism policemen manning major districts of the city.
This was the case on Friday night with stern looking security officials engaged in stop and search around Maitama, Asokoro,Wuse and Garki areas of the city.A similar exercise was repeated on Saturday night with the stop and search operations now complemented with series of mobile patrols around the city.
Unlike in previous exercises, the operation was conducted with such seriousness that an officer even refused a tip from a jeep driving lady at Gana street in Maitama district. This reporter was stopped more than 10 times while driving from Maitama to Asokoro on Friday night.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the surveillance was due to a security report that hinted of security threats from unidentifiable sources. The report was said to have pointed at alleged smuggling of arms with the goal still unclear to security agencies.
Already, security agents have increased their presence on Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent since the arrest of the Lebanese owners of Amigo Plaza. A similar enhanced security presence is observablearound national stadium where the wonderland park operated by the Lebanese was located.
It was, however, not clear if the operation has anything to do with threatfrom Boko Haram.
Reacting to the development, the FCT commissioner of police, Mr Femi Ogunbayode, however, said there was no imminent threat of attack, adding that the FCT is safe and secure.
He explained that the operation was partof an elaborate measures to enhance safety of lives and property in the city, adding that the police command is not waiting for conflict before action.
Ogunbayode explained further that during daytime, the command deployed water cannons and armoured vehicles in strategic points within the city as a precautionary measure, adding that ‘’policing under the command of the current Inspector General of Police is becoming more strategic, proactive and tactical rather than reactive to attacks and conflicts.’’

DEADLY SHOOTOUT

 

Almost one week after daredevil armed robbers stormed Ajao Estate, a highbrow area close to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, in Lagos, residents are still in shock.

They have every cause to. This is because they experienced war, as armed robbers and policemen engaged themselves in a firefight, which lasted for about 45 minutes non-stop. By the time the dust cleared, both sides suffered casualties.

Daily Sun gathered that in the early hours of Sunday, July 14, a group of armed robbers, had attacked a warehouse on Awoniyi Elemo Road, in Ajao Estate, where imported mobile phones, laptops and other ICT products were stored the previous day.

The robbers had arrived at about 11.45pm on Saturday and shot their way through. They were said to have broken the warehouse and started carting goods into their truck. Sources said that before the robbers could conclude their mission, a detachment of policemen from the Mobile Police (MOPOL) unit and state Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arrived and confronted them. A gun duel had ensued.

The robbers were said to have fled the scene and were pursued by policeman. After the confrontation, two policemen were gunned down as well as five members of the gang. Two other robbers were arrested. When Daily Sun visited the warehouse attacked by the robbers within the week, the place was under lock.

Marks of bullets on the wall were noticed. A resident, who simply identified himself as Michael, told Daily Sun: “It was like Armageddon. It was as if there was war. I was sleeping when I was woken by sound of gunshots. I was confused and got up. My wife started shouting at me and asked me to lie down because of stray bullets. Ajao Estate has been relatively peaceful in recent times.

Therefore I was surprise to hear such continuous gunshots. “I learnt the robbers came in their numbers with AK47 and started shooting when the policemen guarding the area open fire at them. They shot one policeman and attacked the warehouse, which belongs to one of the biggest dealer in phones and laptop in Nigeria. If not that the police engaged the robbers in a shootout, perhaps, the hoodlums would have extended their attack to other houses around the area. I must commend the effort of the police.”

Another resident, Johnpaul Ojemba, who likened the gun duel to war, said: “It was as if my building was going to collapse. I live very close to the scene. When I started hearing gunshots, I was very happy that the police was on ground, but I became y jittery when the gunshot could not stop.

The gun battle lasted for over 45 minutes. In fact, it was a real war. “I thank God that the police succeeded in chasing them away. I was later told that only one person died during the encounter.” He however, robbery attacks in the area to the activities of operators of a smoking joint in the area. “This road is known as a spot where illicit drugs are sold.

They sell marijuana with impunity and I guess that the robbers maybe patrons of the joint and therefore, knew the terrain.” He appealed to the police to be more proactive rather than reactive, saying that he suspected that the robbers may still come back to the area.

Another resident, Bose told Daily Sun that as when she started hearing gunshots she feared that the deadly gang, One Million Boys, had stormed the estate.

“I have heard so much about the boys and was scared that they may be the ones that attacked the warehouse. I thank God that the police repelled them.” A recharge card seller in the area lamented that she had been robbed severally, in her shop. She revealed that the warehouse had been attacked once and goods were carted away. She suspected that it may be the same gang that earlier attacked the warehouse that came back.

“Last week, they robbed me at gun point at about 7.30pm. This is why I no longer stay late at night. I am not surprised that they came because strange faces have been patrolling this area in recent times. We need a stiffer security measure to stop further occurrence,” she stated. Another resident, Adeleke, whose house is a few poles from the warehouse said: “This is not the first time. They usually visit in groups.

Last month, they were at Osolo Way and it was terror all the way. The police saved us from being killed by the men of the underworld. It was a sad experience. The shootout was terrible. It was more like a battle field, but I thank God that the police were able to stop them.”

A policeman with the SARS told Daily Sun that the hoodlums killed two policemen, while police killed five of them. he revealed that another two robber were arrested. The policeman revealed that one of the arrested suspect had confessed that the gang was responsible for the killing of a hotelier and four other staff in Ajah recently. He explained that when information got to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, around 12 am that morning, that armed robbers were attacking a businessman, he ordered the officer in-charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, to go after them.

He said Abba Kyari and his team stormed Ajao Estate and engaged the robbers in a shootout, in the estate and Eko Bridge, as the robbers were fleeing. “The shooting at Ajao Estate was a child’s play compared to what happened on Eko Bridge, as the robbers could the police fire power. They started jumping inside the lagoon.

We killed five, arrested two and about three others jumped into the lagoon,” he said. CP Manko, while confirming the incident, commended men of SARS for successfully putting the robbers in their place. He also called on Lagos residents to give information about criminal activities in their areas.

Akpabio Meets Obasanjo Over Jonathan’s Ambition

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, met behind closed doors in Abuja on Thursday to deliberate on the polarisation of the Peoples Democratic Party governors.

It was gathered that at the meeting, Akpabio also solicited Obasanjo’s support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term bid in 2015.

Akpabio, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, was said to have used the opportunity of the meeting which was attended by a PDP chieftain, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, to solicit for the intervention of the former President in ending the differences among the governors.

He was said to have told Obasanjo that the ongoing acrimony among the governors was not good for the image of the PDP and its determination to win the 2015 presidential election.

Since the conduct of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum election, which was won by Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, the PDP governors have continued to exchange hot words on the pages of newspapers.

While those who supported Amaechi’s opponent , Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, have continued to accuse those in the other camp of betrayal, supporters of the winner said it was victory for democracy.

The outcome of the election had resorted in the NGF having two secretariats.

Also, some of the governors, like Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, have warned that winning the PDP presidential primary by Jonathan would not be a guarantee that he would triumph during the presidential election.

Lamido, who is known to be very close to Obasanjo, is one of the four governors from the northern region that visited Amaechi in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. The others were Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa).

At the meeting, Obasanjo was said to have listened with rapt attention when Akpabio solicited his intervention to smoothen the relationship between the President and the governors.

Though the former President was said not to have made any commitment, it was gathered that Akpabio was working towards bringing Obasanjo and Jonathan to come together and discuss.

Akpabio, who is also close to the former President, was said to have expressed his worry on how the former President had distanced himself from the activities of the PDP.

A source privy to the meeting which held at Hilton Hotel said, “It was a brief meeting, where the former President listened with rapt attention as Akpabio spoke. But unexpectedly, he did not make any commitment. But I think that President Jonathan would want to meet with the former President.”

Obasanjo was said to have immediately left for Zimbabwe after the meeting while Fasawe went to the headquarters of the PDP for a discussion with the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur.

Fasawe confirmed the meeting but declined to give details.

“But you know my relationship with Chief Obasanjo,” was the answer he gave when asked to speak on issues that were discussed at the Hilton Hotel meeting.

Meanwhile, members of the National Working Committee of the PDP have been asked not to turn Anambra State into an “oil well” during the forthcoming governorship election in state.

The PDP stakeholders in the state, who stated this at a meeting they had with the leadership of the party at its headquarters, called for transparency in the conduct of the primary.

The meeting was held as part of preparations for the November 16 governorship election in the state.

The stakeholders were drawn from groups within the party in the state.

Among those who spoke at the meeting were a former Governor of the state, Chief Chinwoke Mbadinuju; a former Chairman of Police Service Commission, Chief Simeon Okeke; a former Minister of Health, Prof. A.B.C. Nwosu; a governorship aspirant, Prince Nicolas Ukachukwu, and Mrs. Bridget Obi.

Obi said, “It is only in Anambra State that primaries are held in three different hotels and results would not be announced until they get to a police station.

“My plea is that, please don’t make Anambra your new oil well. Resist temptations in order to succeed.”

The meeting resolved that all members of the state PDP would work in unity to ensure victory for the party during the election.

They also said that all those who have cases in court should withdraw them failing which the party would take severe disciplinary measures against them.

While they said that no member of the party in the state shall institute any suit on any matter affecting the conduct of the forthcoming congresses and primary election for the November governorship election, they however warned that the PDP must not be partial during the polls.

23-Yr-Old Virgin Emerges World Purity Queen

A 23-year-old graduate of Geography and Physical Planning, from Abia State University, Uturu, former Miss Nwanyieze Nnebuife Onyendi, has emerged as the World Purity Queen.

Miss Nwanyieze, who instantly transformed into Mrs. Nwanyieze Purity (Nee Onyendi as a result of her marriage to her husband, Mr. Purity, was confirmed a virgin by a team of female medical experts, who examined her and found her worthy of the crown at the age of 23. For this reason, she went home with a brand new Nissan car.

In her emotion laden speech during the ceremony which took place in Aba, Mrs. Purity said thus: “But for your grace, I would not be kept, but for your grace, I would miss this glory, I am for ever grateful that you have been faithful to me Lord, for your amazing grace.

From the depths of distress, disillusionment, dejection and the certainty of untimely death occasioned by HIV infection through blood transfusion at the tender age of 12, Gloria Asuquo, has risen to become a vibrant, assertive and ambitious young woman who is taking a decisive and incisive battle to one of the world’s most dreaded infectious disorders – HIV/AIDS.

In an encounter with Sola Ogundipe in Abuja, the energetic 24-year-old recounted the frustrations of living as a pauper in addition to the ignominy of HIV stigma and discrimination.

Today, Gloria who once contemplated death until sheer luck and doggedness turned her fortunes around and brought unhindered access to the elusive, life-saving treatment has undergone a transformation. The same HIV infection that took her to the brink of total despair is today a source of her blessing. How did it happen? She tells it all in this encounter.

Living with HIV stigma

I’m a young person diagnosed HIV positive at 12. I was in Primary six going to JSS1. I got infected through blood transfusion. The stigma was so much I couldn’t bear it. There were drugs at that time, but they were too expensive for my parents to afford. Each time my father raised the money to pay for my drugs, my mother would challenge him. Why are you giving her the money? she would ask. We know that she would soon die. Why is she taking the drugs? Why are we wasting money?  My mother went to the Church and told the Reverend who announced my status to the community.

He advised I should be taken to one of the General Hospitals and abandoned there to die. But my father refused to heed such advice. Rather, he challenged the Reverend to take one of his four children to the hospital and abandon her there to die first, only then would he obey the instruction. The pressure became too much.

My mother separated me from the rest of the family. She demarcated my own part of the house separate from the others. The stigma became too much.

Escape from home

One day I could not bear it again. The pressure was too much for me to bear. I had to break the window and jumped out to escape from home at the age of 12. I escaped to an unknown village called Oki. I went to Jabi Park in Abuja, I had only N800. I didn’t know where to go, but just wanted to leave and even die.

Death wish

I wanted to die. I was in the bush; I had stopped using my drugs which at that time cost N15, 000 per month. Test for CD4 count was N6, 000, viral load N12, 000. Where was I going to get that kind of money? I wasn’t working, I just told God to let me die.

Before then, I went to NTA and shared my story. I told them I was HIV positive; I wanted to declare my status to the world. They said I should cover my face, but I said no. I wanted the world to know my story so that if I die, everyone would know what killed me. Breaking the stigma is an individual thing. If you want to come out to testify, nobody can take that away from you

Saved

Then I met Dr. Anthony Agu, a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. When he asked about my parents, I burst into tears. He took me to the University and I told him my story. He took me to his house, gave me a room to stay. But he told me not to disclose my status to his family. He enabled me continue my education and in 1996, I finished my school.

Back to treatment

Dr. Agu then told me that he heard that the drugs were now free that I should go and try. So I went back to Gwagwalada General Hospital where I met Dr. Ajayi. When he asked if I had been taken my drugs, I said yes. I lied to him because I was afraid that if I told him I had not been on drugs, he would send me away.

But he placed me on the drugs. That night I went back to Nsukka, but never went back home. Dr. Ajayi got all my details and related to Dr. Pat Matemilola and Professor Babatunde Oshotimehin who were all looking for me. Eventually, it was Godwin Odemije of Radio Nigeria that came to look for me, and brought me back home. In 2006, I developed typhoid and ovarian cyst. Doctors said I would be operated upon because I stopped using my drugs for a number of years. To the glory of God, I’m still on firstline drugs.

HIV infection as blessing

God first, but the treatment has kept me alive till today. If there were no free drugs, by now, I would have been a forgotten issue. People would have forgotten me, my name would not be written anywhere. HIV has become a blessing to me. I am sitting with important people. If not for HIV, I would not meet Ministers, and Ambassadors and so many important people. If not for HIV, I would not have ever fly in an aircraft. I’m proud to be HIV positive. Today, I’m a testimony in my family, there is no meeting at which they do not seek my opinion. I’m proud that I’m HIV positive.

Make treatment available

I’m still pleading to the Ambassadors and everyone in the country to make these drugs accessible especially the youths and women. We are the most vulnerable and do not have anywhere to go. We are tomorrow’s leaders. We may be driven out when we are diagnosed with HIV because the general belief is that HIV is contracted through promiscuity. But HIV can be contracted through many ways.

The three zeros

If the drugs are made to be more available, only then can we truly have the three zeros, that is, zero related deaths, zero new infection and zero stigma. As a young person I cannot come out but keep quiet and spread it, but if we provide access to treatment, give free education, employment and there is no stigma, I bet you, these three zeros will be achieved.

Ambition

I’m dreaming to become a medical doctor. I want to achieve this. HIV has nothing to do with my future. I would match it and overcome it. I need you to help me achieve my dream and also to find a cure to HIV. I want my name to be great, so that it will be said that Gloria Asuquo found a cure to HIV. I want a scholarship so that I can achieve my goal.

Chimamanda Adichie Wins American Prize

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s third novel AMERICANAH has been awarded the 2013 Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize for fiction.

The Heartland Prize is a literary prize created in 1988 by the Chicago Tribune Newspaper.
According to Elizabeth Taylor, the literary editor of the Chicago Tribune, the prize is awarded yearly in two categories, fiction and
non-fiction, to books that are concerned with American issues, causes and concerns.
“We loved AMERICANAH. It's a powerful, resonant novel and we would be delighted to celebrate it and try to share it with a wider audience,” Taylor wrote.
“I’m very pleased,” Adichie said on receiving news of the prize. “You never know what will happen when you write a novel. And for me, a
Nigerian, to have written this book which is partly about America, and to receive this quintessentially American prize means that I have said something about America as seen through Nigerian eyes that Americans find interesting. I take that as a wonderful compliment. It reminds me
of the ability of literature to make us become briefly alive in bodies not our own.”

Yerima Persuades Senate To Support Underage Marriage In Nigeria

The former Zamfara State Governor and current Senator, Sani Yerima, whose marriage to a 13-year-old girl drew widespread outrage in 2009, literally pressed the Senate to reverse a vote that appeared to outlaw underage marriage, almost marring a crucial constitution amendment vote Tuesday.

The Senate constitution review committee had recommended alteration of section 29 of the constitution that deals with the manner of renunciation of citizenship.

The constitution states that full age means 18 years and above and the committee proposed a removal of part b of the clause which states that any woman that is married shall be deemed to be of full age.

Senators overwhelmingly backed the recommendation that it be removed, leaving the prospect of final passage if accepted by the House of Representatives and state Houses of Assembly.

However, Mr. Yerima questioned why the section dealing with age of a married woman was deleted, describing the move as un-Islamic.

He demanded a revisit, a call that was turned down by Senate president, David Mark.

Mr. Mark ruled that as a member of the constitution review committee, Mr. Yerima had every opportunity to have sought a review and was against the chamber’s rule in seeking an amendment while the votes were on.

Mr. Yerima insisted that under Islamic tenet, a woman is of age once married and countering that order as already stated in the constitution would be discriminatory and in violation of another section of the constitution directing the National Assembly to steer away from Islamic marriage.

“The constitution says the National Assembly shall legislate on marriage except those under Islamic rites,” said the former governor whose marriage to the teenager triggered months of controversy. “Islam says once a woman is married, she is of age.”

Mr. Mark however conceded to a second vote after other proposed amendments had been concluded, saying he had to act due to the “sensitivity” of the matter as it concerns religion.

Still, Mr. Yerima’s demand was again thrashed 60 to 35 at a repeat vote but the section could not be deleted as constitution amendments require two thirds of the entire members-73 for the Senate- for a proposal to pass.

JTF In Jigawa Kills Three Suspected Terrorists

Members of the JTF in Guri Local government area of Jigawa state in the North West Nigeria have killed three suspected terrorists during a gun duel.

In a press release signed by the JTF spokesperson Captain Ikedichi Iweha, he says four AK47 rifles, five magazines, 164 rounds of 7.6mm special Ammunition for AK47 rifles were recovered at the hideout.

“This followed extensive intelligence build-up of the combined team of the JTF and it has yielded a positive result that led to the death of the three insurgents.”

Meanwhile, the JTF has warned that the military action against terrorists in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa state has forced them to seek refuge in other parts of the country especially in areas with little security presence.
