Several
Islamist militants from the Boko Haram sect were killed in overnight gun
battles as they returned to attack Mafa village in Borno according to
eyewitnesses.
The
militants reportedly returned to the village to attack villagers when they met
fierce resistance from the Nigerian army unit stationed in the area.
Some
villagers said the sect members came out in their hundreds to fight the army
instead of retreating.
The
fierce battle claimed the lives of several Boko Haram militants with many of
them injured according to Abba Umaru, one of the villagers who escaped the
latest invasion.
The eyewitnesses fled to Maiduguri some 45 kilometers from the village shortly after the attack. There is no word from the military about attack as at the time of publishing this report.
The Boko Haram Islamist sect has escalated its bloody insurgency that led to the death of at least 150 people in the last one week, 32 persons were killed on March 2nd in an earlier attack on Mafa village by the sect.
